Do you have any idea what it takes to use a self tanner? No? Me neither till tried it before going on boat to Mexico in February. I should of tried it out before just doing it and then getting on the ship. OMG I had spots that were really dark on my knees and ankles! Now I know there is a right way and a bad way to do it and I will have to learn it.
For starters take time to use a body scrub all over the areas you want to use the self-tanner on. If you don’t your dry winter like skin is going to cause you issues! Take your time doing it and don’t use a dark tanner if you are really fair skin. Work up to the tan or you will look like you have a fake tan and you so do not want that!

Summer Skincare Guide Beauty Expert Jan Moran recommends Summer Skincare Essentials
May, 2011-The summer season is here and the essentials are already picked out—new bathing suit, the perfect pair of wedges, and sunglasses—but before hitting the beach don’t forget about the most important accessory, the skin. Skin is one of the first things people notice and needs to be treated with care. Scentsa® founder and beauty expert Jan Moran dishes on her recommendations for the must have summer skincare products to keep the sun at bay and skin aglow.
The first and most important part of the summer skincare routine is sunscreen. Sunscreen, a guaranteed way to protect the complexion and body, is the best defense from future wrinkles and sun spots. For normal skin, Clarins Sun Wrinkle Control Cream SPF 50 is a high-level sunscreen in a weightless formula that can be worn easily under makeup. For oily skin, try Kiehl’s Ultra Protection Water-Based Sunscreen with an SPF of 25, which won’t over moisturize skin. For dry skin, choose a sunscreen with an SPF level over 40. Shiseido Ultimate Sun Protection Cream works with skin to moisturize and protect it. “When choosing sunscreen there are a few simple guidelines,” says Moran. Here are her four guidelines:
1) Be sure sunscreen blocks UVA and UVB rays; UVB rays cause sunburns and UVA rays cause wrinkles and sunspots.
2) Sunscreen should be at least SPF 15.
3) Choose higher SPF for fairer skin.
4) Lastly, apply sunscreen at least thirty minutes before going in the sun, ensuring it absorbs into skin.
In the summer the combination of heat and sun exposure can dehydrate skin. The best solution is a tinted moisturizer, which will give skin coverage while keeping it protected and hydrated. For oily skin, Laura Mercier Oil Free Tinted Moisturizer offers coverage in a non-greasy formula with a variety of shades for a perfect skin tone match, and an SPF of 20. For dry skin, Shiseido The Skincare Tinted Moisture Protection has an SPF of 20 to keep out UV rays while giving dewy light coverage. For normal skin, focus on a formula that continually hydrates skin throughout the day, such as Clarins Hydra-Care Tinted Moisturizer, which promotes a smoother looking complexion, and an SPF of 6. “Tinted moisturizers provide sheer coverage,” says Moran. “To ensure the best application, dot your forehead, chins, and cheeks with a slightly damp sponge or, finger, then use a sweeping motion to apply evenly over your entire face.”
Still interested in that summer glow but don’t want to subject skin to harsh UV rays? A self-tanner is the perfect answer. Self-tanners can be tricky, so be sure to read instructions carefully and don’t rush. Benefit’s Talk to the Tan facial tint glides on smoothly, leaving a beautiful bronze tint that washes off easily. For a longer lasting glow, Clarins Self Tanning Instant Gel leaves a rich tan without streaks or the tell-tale self tanning scent. “One common self tanning mistake is forgetting about your face,” says Moran. “Be sure to use a tanner specifically for the face. Use plastic gloves to avoid orange hands, but don’t forget to apply on the backs on your hands.” Dior Bronze Self-Tanner Natural Glow Face is an easy- to-apply, tinted gel-cream that gives a tawny brilliant color to skin.
